What Is Sphering?
http://www.spheremania.com/

Well it's pretty simple really; you climb inside a huge, big, bouncy, ball, you get strapped in so you're nice and safe and snug....Then you get pushed down a hill!!

8 young people from Burntwood init did just that.... One cold Saturday afternoon

The activity was a reward for competition 2 winners and 6 organisers of the 'Auzzie Mayhem' event that took place at the start of the summer holidays

What they said.....

'Amazing experience', Kinsey age 16, 'all my friends want to do it', 'and I have'! Brett age 16, 'I was a bit scared at first, but I knew I was safe' Amy 15

This project began in a detached session on a Friday night, young people spoke to youth workers about the positive activities they would like to be involved in.

From that it was decided by yp's to organise a day/evening to demonstrate to the local community that when engaged in positive activities ASB rate is reduced, by giving yp's something to do

They worked tirelessly wit the support of init coordinator promoting, organising, decision making, and problem solving to enable the Auzzie mayhem event to take place at local Redwood park

Over 160 young people from the age of 13 to 19 showed up on the day to take part in a number of activities from wall climbing, kangaroo boxing, surf simulator, bucking bronco, barbecue, and fuse ball

And there were no reports of ASB on that evening and many more to follow!

Hollywood Comes to Burntwood Init

Burntwood Init will be giving the young people of Burntwood a slice of Hollywood, thanks to a new cinema.

The latest multi-media projection system has been installed at the youth centre in Cherry Close, Burntwood.  The mini cinema boasts a 10 foot screen, and black modular seating units, which can seat up to 15 young people.

The room is available for hire, free of charge to groups of young people added 11 to 19 years, on the first Friday of every month between 8pm and 10pm.  Burntwood Init will pay for the movie, which can be up to a certificate 15.  Moviegoers can even order pizza, and there will be refreshments on sale.

To attend the cinema, the young people need to be living or attending school in Burntwood.  They also need parental consent if they are watching a film with a certificate older than their age.

Julie Aleksejuk, Burntwood Init Co-ordinator, said:  "The cinema set up we have is fantastic, and really recreates the atmosphere of going to the movies.  It's already proving to be tremendously popular with the young people, and is a great way of getting young people occupied on a Friday night."

Where are they now?
Youth service news, 6 young people took part in a 2 day sailing course as part of the init summer programme. 6 YPs achieved RYA stage 1.

The sailing club now has retained 3 as regular sailors. 1 of those has achieved stage 2 and will be awarded the Most Promising Sailor of the Year Award.

"Statistically this is above the RYA expectations of 10% retention; as such we are pleased with the outcome and hope that the 6 r YPs felt that the experience was positive." Sailing Coach

Internet e-Safety

Are you aware of the dangers online?

e-Safety is an issue that involves everyone, every child, every young person, every parent  and every professional. By its very nature it is an extensive issue subject to a dynamism that demands constant attention and review. Yet this extensive nature can also lead to a multiplicity of messages. Rather than develop a complete range of new materials Staffordshire has chosen to bring together messages from the key agencies and organisations that have a role in e-safety.

Burntwood Init Wins Award

1st October 2008 Burntwood Init was the proud winner of an award from South Staffordshire Regeneration Awards 2008, it gained 1st place out of 4 others short listed for 'Inspiring Young People'. Init Summer Success

Burtnwood Init have had their best summer yet, thanks to a whole host of activities and participation.

250 young people, aged between 11and 17 and from Burntwood, engaged in positive activities throughout the summer, thanks to Burntwood Init.  Activities such as sailing, young fire fighters, wake boarding and BSM driving courses ensured young people engaged in positive activities.  A total of 31 young people gained a variety of accreditations, including RYA Level One Sailing, bronze and silver Cutting Edge Wakeboarding, and BSM awards.

As a celebration, Init held a special 'Aussie Mayhem' day in Redwood park, co-ordinated by a group of young people from Burntwood.  Over 150 young people attended and got involved in table football competitions, gladiators challenge, bucking bronco and much more.   Rain did not stop the fun, with Redwood youth and community centre opening its doors to offer shelter from the bad weather.

County Councillor Ben Adams, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, said:  "Burntwood Init has offered an excellent programme of activities throughout the summer, engaging with hundreds of young people, and they are continually striving to find out what young people in the area want.  The whole of Staffordshire Youth Service has had an excellent summer in terms of activity participation, showing young people want to get involved in interesting, invigorating and positive activities."

The projects were supported by Staffordshire Youth Service, Positive Futures, local Police Community Support Officers, Chase Terrace fire station as well as Tescos, Bradshaws, Morrisons, Burntwood printers, One Stop, Spar, and the Lichfield District Safer Community partnership.

Garden is Blooming Marvellous thanks to Burntwood Yahoo

Five community-minded young people, along with staff from Staffordshire Youth Service and Staffordshire Wildlife Trust have transformed a garden at the Oakdene Day Centre.

Since mid-January, the young people, who are members of Burntwood Young Adults Helping Out Others (YAHOO), have worked in all sorts of weather to improve the garden at the centre, which had become overgrown and insecure.  They met with users of the centre to plan and gain ideas of what they would like done to the garden to improve it, in order to create a garden that visitors to the centre can use and enjoy.

Members gave up their own free time to work on the garden, as part of a Positive Futures initiative.  They made bird boxes, bug homes, a pond to encourage wildlife and birds, painted benches, fixed fences, dismantled an unsafe and unstable green house, and planted borders.

The garden was finished on April 16, with the young people presenting their handiwork to staff and service users.  For completing the project, each young person received accreditation in the form of a John Muir Award, which encourages people to take care of wild places.

Julie Aleksejuk, Burntwood Init Co-ordinator said:  "It's great to see young people really making an effort in their local communities.  These five have worked really hard, dedicating their own free time to create a garden that users of the Oakdene Day Centre can enjoy for years to come."

Visitors to the Oakdene Day Centre and carers have commented on how bright, clean and fresh the garden now looks, thanks to the younger people taking time out to meet with them and work on the project

The young people will now go on a go carting trip, funded by Burntwood Init, as a thank you for all their hard work.

Blades Blaze to Glory in Football Tournament

Local girl's football team, the Burntwood Blades, have managed to overcome stiff opposition and a frozen pitch to be crowned winners of the Burntwood Init 5-a-side football tournament.

The competition, which was heavily supported by Staffordshire Youth Service, Staffordshire Football Association and South Staffordshire Young Women's League, ran over 6 weeks, and saw local girl's teams from across Burntwood compete against each other to be crowned winners.  After three cancellations due to a frozen pitch, the final was eventually played between the Burntwood Blades and the Superstars, with the Blades eventually being crowned overall winners.

Prizes included a signed picture of Karen Carney, England international, and Sue Smith, England's ladies forward.  The winners also received gift certificates for tickets to see an England Ladies international game, as well as a team trophy.

County Councillor Eric Drinkwater, cabinet support member for the Youth Service, said:  "I wish to congratulate the Burntwood Blades on a very hard-fought win, but also to every single team taking part in the tournament.  It's good to see so many of our young people engaging in sporting activity, keeping fit, and above all, enjoying themselves."

If there are any girls living or going to school in the Burntwood area, and are interested in joining a local Burtnwood football team, please contact Julie Aleksejuk, Burntwood Init Co-ordinator, on 07864 989104.
